Collection of Eleven Antique Hickory Shafted Golf Clubs Including A. Duncan and Anderson Anstruther
Collection of eleven golf clubs dating from the early 20th century. The group comprises ten clubs with hand-forged iron or steel heads and one wood-headed club, all featuring hickory wood shafts. The metal heads are joined to the shafts with pinned hosels, with several exhibiting knurled or serrated textures at the base of the hosel. The grips consist of various materials including wrapped leather, cloth, and early rubber.
Several clubs bear legible marks and stamps. The wood-headed club features an oval stamp on the underside reading A. DUNCAN MAKER STIRLING. A putter is stamped CLIMAX FIFE above a horizontal line with a central circle and PUTTING CLEEK below. An iron head bears a circular mark reading ANDERSON ANSTRUTHER surrounded by the words WARRANTED HAND FORGED MADE IN SCOTLAND. Another iron is stamped with a six-pointed star containing the initials S & S, accompanied by text reading BEST TRADE MARK WARRANTED HAND FORGED MADE IN SCOTLAND. One iron is marked J & A DICKSON BRAID ROAD EDINBURGH WARRANTED HAND FORGED with the word PUTTER near the toe.
American regional marks are also present: one iron features an oval stamp for JOHNSON & TAYLOR 16 E. 42ND ST. N.Y., and another is stamped J. CLARK SPECIAL SPRINGFIELD with a stamped L near the toe. A specialized club features a bulldog head device and is stamped BULL DOG BRAND WARRANTED HAND FORGED CONNELL BETHLEHEM SPECIAL PUTTER. Another iron head bears a circular stamp reading PRESTWICK AK CLUBS, while another is marked with the name Kenmore in script. One iron is heavily oxidized, and the markings are not legible.
