First edition copy of Scotland’s Gift Golf by C.B. Macdonald
This is a cornerstone book in any golf library. In
addition to the excellent, insightful narrative and
historical account of golf by Macdonald, it contains
a treasure trove of 56 plates and lithographs
including a nicely intact map of the National Golf
Links to the rear.
Although too numerous to mention all, among the
unique and interesting illustrations are a photo of
Macdonald at the top of his swing in 1895, a photo
of old Tom and Jamie Morris in the old workshop,
photos and drawings of the Lido golf course
(including Alistair Mackenzie’ s winning drawing of
the Lido two shot hole (in a competition sponsored
by Macdonald,) and a 1926 photo of Bobby Jones
and Macdonald.
This book was once owned by Jack Jolly and bears a
signed 1939 Xmas gift inscription from him.
Interestingly, Jolly invented the liquid center golf
ball in 1911, and competed in 10 US Opens starting
in 1902.
This book is a must cover to cover read and here is
an increasingly hard to find 1928 first trade
edition copy.
