Frank Paton Signed Golf Etching Royal and Ancient St Andrews 1798 Published 1894
An antique hand-signed etching on paper by British artist Frank Paton (1856-1909), titled Royal and Ancient (St Andrews 1798). Published in 1894 by Leggatt Brothers at 62 Cheapside, London, the print features a large central scene depicting late 18th-century golfers in period attire playing on the links at St Andrews. This central image is bordered by several humorous, pun-based vignettes illustrating golf terminology, including Sand Bunkers, Putting Green, Four Up and Two to Play, Starting From Scratch, Driven From The Tee, Missing A Hole, A Good Round, and Stymied.
The print is hand-signed in pencil by the artist in the lower-left margin below the Sand Bunkers vignette. The artwork is housed in a dark, ornate molded wooden frame with a cream-colored mat under Tru Vue TruGuard UV-protection glass. The reverse is sealed with a gray paper dust cover, fitted with D-ring hangers and a wire, and retains a modern plastic sleeve containing a handwritten note detailing the signature and publication information, along with a Tru Vue UV protection sticker.
