Frank Stranahan's 1949 Sterling North and South Amateur Winner Tray


Frank Stranahan with a 2 and 1 triumph over Harvie Ward in the 36 hole final match claimed his second North and South Amateur title (1946). The triumph also avenged his loss to Ward in the events 1948 final. In this the 49th edition of the highly respected amteur tournament, Stranahan was a run-away winner in his semifinal match by a 12 and 11 score over no less a future star then the 19-year-old college sophomore from Wake Forest Arnold Palmer. For his victory in this event Stranahan received the silver tray which is offered in this lot, and carries the inscription:
