Jerome Travers Signed Album Page with Vintage Wire Photo
For those assembling a run of United States Open champions autographs Jerome (Jerry) Travers will prove to be one of the more challenging. One of the top players of his day, he was one of only five amateurs in history to win the U.S. Open, claiming the Championship in 1915. He also won the U.S.G.A. Amateur four times (1907,08,12,13). Travers was voted into the PGA Hall of Fame in the original group in 1940. What makes this signature so difficult? Yes, he died early (1951) before the autograph craze took hold. More important is that he suddenly retired from golf in 1915, leaving the game except for a few World War I exhibitions and a very short, unsuccessful pro career. He was obscure, so much, that he did not finish the last 10 years of his life in the golf business but as an inspector at Pratt & Whitney aircraft. This treasured example of his autograph is signed 'Yours Sincerely'
It measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" in length over the album page which it was formed on. This signature is paired in this lot with an original United Press International (U.P.I.) wire photo of Travers putting (EX-MT condition). James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this example of Jerome Travers autograph, and their paperwork of authenticity will come with this lot.
