Late 1800's John White and Co Brass Gutta Percha Golf Ball Mold
This 1800's heavy-duty brass golf ball mold was manufactured in Edinburgh, Scotland, for the production of bramble pattern gutta-percha or "gutty" golf balls. The tool consists of two interlocking cylindrical halves precision-machined from heavy cast brass. An oval brass maker's plaque is applied to the side of the lower half, featuring an embossed border and text reading JOHN WHITE & CO / BRASSFOUNDERS / & / PLUMBERS / EDINBURGH.
The exterior of the mold is stamped with several technical and alignment marks. The designation 27 BALL is incised on the upper rim of the top half. Both halves are stamped with the matching serial number 190, ensuring the two components remain a paired set for correct alignment. The side of each half is further incised with P. PATENT / NO 11917. Near the interlocking rectangular tab, a five-dot die pattern is punched into both sections to facilitate rapid orientation during the casting process.
The internal cavity features a complex, hemispherical machined grid or knurled pattern designed to produce the distinctive "gutta percha" surface texture common on golf balls from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The mold utilizes a tongue-and-groove interlocking system to maintain a flush seal during use.
