Ray, Travis, and Leach (Ed.). Three Early 20th-Century Golf Books. 1903-1913. First and Early Editions.
Three octavo volumes concerning the history and technique of golf, published between 1903 and approximately 1913. The first volume is Great Golfers in the Making, edited by Henry Leach. Published by Methuen and Company in London, 1907. The copyright page states First Published in 1907. It is bound in the publisher's red cloth with blind-stamped titles on the front board and gilt lettering on the spine. This work includes twenty-four photographic plates featuring portraits of early Open Champions such as Old Tom Morris, Willie Auchterlonie, Robert Martin, and Robert Ferguson, as well as players like Harry Vardon and James Braid.
The second volume is Practical Golf by Walter J. Travis, published by Harper and Brothers in New York and London, 1903. This is stated as a New and Revised Edition on the title page. The volume is bound in green cloth with a white dot border and a gilt-stamped silhouette of a golfer and caddy on the front board. The title page bears a large handwritten presentation inscription in heavy black ink reading Compliments of R.K. to E.A. D with double underlines. The text is illustrated with photographs demonstrating swing techniques and includes a chapter titled Caddies.
The third volume is Inland Golf by Edward Ray, winner of the 1912 Open Championship. Published in London by T. Werner Laurie Ltd. and in New York by J. Pott and Company, this edition is undated but was released circa 1913. It is bound in publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering. The front flyleaf contains a handwritten ownership inscription in black ink reading Property of H C Boardman. The volume is illustrated with photographic plates showing the author's bag and equipment, including drivers, cleeks, driving-irons, mashies, and niblicks, as well as swing sequences.
