Standard Golf Co. Mills Sunderland 183178 Braid Mills Msd3 Model Standard Lie Slazenger 3 W/ Shaft Stamp
An early 20th-century antique golf club, model MSD3, manufactured by The Mills (Standard Golf Company) of Sunderland, England, for the retailer Slazenger. The club features a cast aluminum alloy head and a tapered hickory wood shaft. The sole of the head is stamped with the numeral 3 at the toe and contains incised text reading THE MILLS, MSD3 MODEL, STANDARD LIE, 9 ozs 5 drs, and SLAZENGER. A lead weight is inset into the sole near the heel. The crown of the club features a circular maker mark with the text STANDARD, MILLS, LEEDS, PATENTED, and SUNDERLAND. The club face is stamped with a series of horizontal scoring lines. The hickory shaft is stamped with the name SLAZENGER. The handle is finished with a period leather-wrapped grip with visible spiral seams. The club shows signs of age and use. The hickory shaft is structurally sound but exhibits surface wear and minor discoloration. The leather grip is heavily aged, showing drying, wear, and partial unraveling at the ends.
