Tiger Woods' Actual 1999 US Open at Pinehurst Contestant Badge
A podium finish at T3 and just two back of the man that would steal the headlines that magical week in Pinehurst, Tiger Woods was in contention through all four rounds at the 1999 US Open. It was just months before Woods' second major win at the PGA Championship in Medinah and part of a eight win 1999 campaign - the second most during his career. Payne Stewart's contestant badge from this same tournament used the same typeface with with matching 'W's' we sold in March 2021 for a record $36,497. The crossed middle 'W' hump would be used for 1999 and 2000 contestant badges, changing before and after (1998 and 2001 when they would go to stacked plain text of first and last names). We would later sell Tiger Woods' from the 2008 US Open for again over $30k in November 2024 - now we have Tiger Woods' actual contestant badge from the 1999 US Open!
Brad Carpenter "Locker Room Attendant" had a nice ring to it. Our consignor Carpenter applied for his three prefered volunteer roles in advance of the 1999 US Open in Pinehurst, and that was what Carpenter would be refered to as that week. It was hard work, but after the dust settled this badge left by T3 superstar entering his prime Woods would be the perk. This badge employs the traditional USGA contestant badge design which features the Great Seal depicted in detail just above a horizontal nameplate stripe engraved with five uppercase letters - 'WOODS.' The medal badge of admittance inside the Championship ropes, highest form of credential from the most collectible modern day golfer remains in near mint condition with original pin clasp firmly attached on the reverse. It was 27 years ago that Payne Stewart claimed victory by one stroke over Phil Mickelson with a 15 foot putt on 18, the 72nd hole of the Championship contested at Pinehurst No. 2. A signed letter of provenance by consignor and 1999 US Open volunteer Brad Carpenter will come with this lot.
