Trio of Original 1923 U.S. Women's Amateur Golf Press Photographs Featuring Edith Cummings and Alexa Stirling
This collection consists of three original vintage black-and-white press photographs documenting pivotal figures and events in early 20th-century American women's golf. Two of the photographs document the 1923 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship held at the Westchester Biltmore Club in Rye, New York. The first image depicts tournament winner Edith Cummings being congratulated by runner-up Alexa Stirling with the championship trophy displayed between them. The second photograph shows Cummings putting on the fourth green during the championship match while Stirling watches from the background. Both 1923 images include original typed news captions attached to the lower margin and are stamped on the reverse with credit for Fotograms, N.Y. The third photograph is a rare biographical document depicting a six-year-old Alexa Stirling in mid-swing, wearing period attire including a pleated skirt, lace-up boots, and a large hair bow. The reverse of the childhood portrait features a typed identification line and a red ink photographer stamp for William G. Greene. Edith Cummings, the subject of two photos, is historically significant as the inspiration for the character Jordan Baker in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby, while Alexa Stirling is a recognized World Golf Hall of Fame inductee.
