Vintage Protex Expanding Album Containing Professional Golf and Travel Photographs circa 1928-1931
A landscape-format expanding photo album with dark gray textured covers. The front cover features a gold-stamped rectangular label in the lower-right corner containing three rows of text: the top row reads PROTEX, the middle row reads EXPANDING, and the bottom row reads ALBUM. The binding is a post-style system with three holes at the left margin, though the original fasteners or cords are not present. The interior contains heavy brown mounting paper with a printed grid pattern.
The album houses a collection of silver gelatin photographs of varying sizes, primarily documenting professional golf and social travels between 1928 and 1931. The content includes images of men in period golf attire, including plus-fours and argyle knitwear. Several pages contain handwritten fountain pen and pencil captions. One photograph is captioned J. Ballantine & Self and depicts two men on a golf course (photo 4). Another significant image shows a man in white attire and a newsboy cap, captioned Press man at Columbus Ohio for Ryder Cup Match 1931 (photo 9). Tournament-related photography depicts large crowds and press photographers following a golfer across a course (photos 5 and 7).
Social and travel images include scenes on the deck of a ship with notations for Osterley 1928 (photo 8) and a woman seated outdoors with two dogs captioned Murie at home avec chiens 1928 (photo 8). A resort-style hotel building is shown in a small landscape-format print (photo 10). Other identified locations in captions include Langley Pk (photo 6) and Inverness 1931 (photo 9).
